The evil kite

Kite surfing is a dangerous sport and if you want to learn it,
go for proper instructions.

To kite surf is my first project in Sydney, have been talking to some kite surfer friends to understand more and finally we are going to do it!

Here is the story about how I started to learn kite surfing...
Went to Botany Bay last Saturday- the most popular kite surf spot in Sydney near the international airport. Supposedly no sharks and less waves.

For a picnic cum kite surf check out!

The wind was really strong, NICE! I mean
Chatted to a happy German gal who kited on a 9m at Dolls point.

Unfortunately having a DSLR also means that if you are doing something more important than photography, you wont bother to take the camera out of the bag.
Will take photos of kite surfers next time.

We went to a kite shop to check out the rates of lessons and prices of equipment.
It is an expensive sport, one lesson will cost AUD 300/pax for 3 hours
and a normal person will need around 2 lessons at least.

After some debates, we drove to a shop in Manly to get my first kite -
Cabrinha 2006 7m in blue
(had wanted red at first but decided that blue matches my blue harness)

And what happened next, pls never NEVER follow.

Et looked at all movies and internet info on kite surf, collected the key points and briefed me
we studied it for 2 hours or so and the next day,
decided to fly the kite in a huge open space 5 mins from home

It was a gusty day and the kite couldn't launch easily although the weather tower reported 20 knots.

However once it got launched... it was awesome.

and actually powerful....
and VERY SCARY!

That's why you wont see a photo of me launching it.
The kite was flying me instead :(

It literally lifted me up into the sky like Mary Poppins (except i was not singing but screaming),
threw me down on the ground like a ball
and body dragged me for 10m

 End result:
a swollen knee and an over pulled right arm and shoulder. Some miscellaneous bruises...
and an utterly shocked me

Im glad of one thing though, that we were in an isolated open area and didn't injure anyone else.

u should have done it in the water... not on land!!! THAT'S A BIG NO NO... NEVER do it on land, it's not your typical kite flying!!! it's safer in the water, at least no banging against hard ground....

and 1 more note, when the wind is gusty, from 0knots 1 moment to 20knots the next, it's time to keep your kite.... else prepare to experience freak accidents...

better to learn from a certified instructor, than to learn from another who doesn't know kitesurfing... :)

babe, actually Et had 3 hours lessons before some years ago and thats how we managed to convinced the gal in the shop to sell us the kite. My stupid leg wound has not totally recovered so cant get into the sea yet.. thanks for the advice on the gusty wind, should have controlled our eagerness to fly it. Was lucky to survived the banging. If you have good sites or movies or better still, personal tips to share. Pls drop me an email beechezparis@hotmail.com ok? havent downloaded msn yet so dont have your email addy..

haiyah, i only retrieved your voice mail yesterday. How's your knee? No advice from me...better see the doc than save $$. Time to do safer sports, e.g. baking, cycling on cycle paths, jogging!
