I can't wait to take down the bandages soon but have to wait another 5 weeks to remove the giant vulgar looking splint on my broken thumb :(
It started on a beautiful Sunday morning. I fastened my basket on my push bike to go to the market 1.2 km down by the river and planned to go for a dip in the river on the way back. The wind was more than 30 knots and Etienne was not able to fly.
On the way to the market down the steep slope of Shaw's Bay, a sudden gust of wind blew off my hat. I was dashing down the hill and my first thought was " I must save my hat! it will be rolled over by the cars!"
The next moment, I screamed so loudly as I flew off my bike with my front brakes jammed in and tumbled onto the pavement. I thought I was broken into pieces as pain all over my body brought tears.
The kind passer-bys picked up all my belongings: scratched cartier wallet, parts of my handphone and my towel. The towel went into my mouth as I bite it to endure the pain while waiting for the ambulance. I must be in shock as I was trembling and couldn't move. A kind soul walked up the hill to my place to inform Etienne.
The rest of the day was spent in 2 hospitals, a total of 8 hrs, waiting around in pain and empty stomach, just to get my thumb straightened and the bloody wounds covered.
Long story short, the lesson from the accident is all bones are precious, especially the tiny ones in the fingers. If I have to fall again I will keep my hands to my body and not try to use them to break the fall. Also don't get distracted when cycling and do not ever use the front brakes.
I have few friends here, mainly my neighbours and they were all so concerned. 80 YO Louis made lunch for me, helped me buy food from the grocery. Sue sent me to the hospital for my review.
Et not only had to take over the household chores, he even had to wash my hair. In the hospital, he took me on a breathing exercise while the morphine was taking its time to work into me. Then he made stupid jokes in the ER area to distract me. Gosh the jokes really cracked me up! They were good.. or I mean, Great stuffs! *thumb up (anyway my right thumb is always "up" to prevent blood from rushing in)
He then surprised me with flowers on Day 2 and invited me to a Thai restaurant (comfort food for a sick asian) on Day 7. Im pretty lucky after all, he told me yesterday that we will not be both down at the same time as there will always be one of us pulling the other up. So true, it is day 9 today and I feel much better.
Merci! T'es le meilleur!
